252 Vaishnav Varta 201 - Uttamdas Kshatriya, a Resident of Gujarat

Now the devotional account of the sevak Uttamdas Kshatriya, a resident of Gujarat, of Shri Gusainji is narrated. The Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment) of his prasang is now being explained.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): This is a sattvic devotee. In the divine play, her name is Shri Rangi. She manifested from the art of dance. Therefore, this is the nature of her devotional sentiment.

Prasang 1 – Uttamdas Offers the Finest Cloth to Shri Nathji Once, Shri Gusainji traveled to Gujarat for the darshan of Shri Ranchhodji. At that time, Uttamdas had the darshan of Shri Gusainji. Then Uttamdas thought within himself, “It would be good if I were to take refuge in Shri Gusainji.” So Uttamdas humbly prayed to Shri Gusainji, “Maharaj! Please bestow Your grace upon me and accept me into Your refuge. I have been wandering aimlessly for a very long time.” Then Shri Gusainji said, “Go and bathe, then come.” Uttamdas bathed and returned in a state of ritual purity without touching anyone.

Then Shri Gusainji, out of His grace, bestowed the Name upon Uttamdas. The next day, He performed Brahmasambandh for him. Uttamdas then offered a gift according to his ability. After that, Shri Gusainji departed and proceeded to Dwarkaji for the darshan of Shri Ranchhodji. He remained there for several days, taking the darshan of Shri Ranchhodji. Afterward, He departed from there and arrived at Shri Gokul. There He performed the seva and adornment of Shri Navneetpriyaji. Meanwhile, Uttamdas remained in his own country.

At that time, a fine brocade cloth woven with gold thread came up for sale there. Uttamdas thought within himself, “This cloth is worthy of Shri Gusainji.” So Uttamdas purchased the cloth. Later, Uttamdas set out for Shri Gokul to have the darshan of Shri Gusainji. After several days, he arrived at Shri Gokul and first had the darshan of Shri Navneetpriyaji during the Rajbhog Aarti. After Shri Gusainji completed the seva of Shri Navneetpriyaji, He returned to His seat. Then Uttamdas came, offered full prostrated obeisance, and presented that brocade cloth before Shri Gusainji.

When Shri Gusainji saw the cloth, He became very pleased. From His own lips He said, “This cloth is worthy of Shri Nathji.” The next day, Shri Gusainji personally took Uttamdas with Him to the temple of Shri Nathji. There, Shri Gusainji offered that brocade cloth to Shri Nathji, and Shri Nathji accepted it. Afterward, Shri Govarddhan Nathji granted darshan to all the Vaishnavas. Seeing the darshan of Shri Govarddhan Nathji, Uttamdas became greatly delighted. He considered his birth to have become successful and fulfilled. For several days afterward, Uttamdas continued taking the darshan of Shri Govarddhan Nathji.

Then Shri Gusainji returned to Shri Gokul, and Uttamdas accompanied Him there. At Shri Gokul, Uttamdas had the darshan of Shri Navneetpriyaji and all the other seven divine swarups. He stayed at Shri Gokul for several more days. Later, Uttamdas prayed to Shri Gusainji, “Maharaj! If You grant permission, I wish to undertake the pilgrimage of Braj.” Shri Gusainji granted permission, saying, “Very well.” Uttamdas offered obeisance to Shri Gusainji and set out on the Braj pilgrimage. After several days, he completed the entire Braj pilgrimage and returned to Shri Gokul. There he offered full prostrated obeisance to Shri Gusainji.

Shri Gusainji asked him, “Have you completed the Braj pilgrimage?” Uttamdas humbly replied, “Maharaj! By Your grace, I completed the Braj pilgrimage properly and successfully.” After that, for several more days Uttamdas had the darshan of Shri Navneetpriyaji and all the other seven divine swarups. Then, after taking leave of Shri Gusainji, he returned to his home. At home, by the grace of Shri Gusainji, Shri Nathji continually granted him divine experiences.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): In this account, it is shown that the finest objects should be offered for the acceptance of the Lord. This is the duty of a sevak.

Such was Uttamdas, a supremely blessed devotee and a great recipient of Shri Gusainji's grace. Therefore, how much can one possibly say in describing his account?
