252 Vaishnav Varta 164 - A follower of another path, who sat in the cremation ground and ate thereNow the sentiment of the account of a follower of another path, who sat in the cremation ground and ate there, a sevak of Shri Gusainji, is being described.
Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): This devotee is a tamasic bhakta. In the divine play her name is “Kanta.” She manifested from Mohini; therefore this is her devotional form.
Prasang 1 – Shri Gusainji Accepts Even the Fallen
Once several Vaishnavas were gathered together in Shri Gokul discussing among themselves: “Brother! In these times the glory of Shri Gusainji is truly extraordinary. Even if someone is sinful, wicked in conduct, or hypocritical, still if they come into his refuge, he removes all their sins.” Among those Vaishnavas sat a follower of another path. He said, “Vaishnavas! If what you say is truly correct, then know that I myself have committed many wicked deeds. Therefore now bring me into the refuge of Shri Gusainji and have my sins removed. Then I shall know that your words are true.”
Then the Vaishnavas replied, “Today come with us.” Afterward those Vaishnavas brought that outsider with them to Shrinathji Temple before Shri Gusainji. All of them offered dandavat pranam and narrated the whole matter before Shri Gusainji: “Maharaj! This man follows another path, but he submits before you, asking, ‘Please mercifully accept me into your refuge.’” Then Shri Gusainji instructed him, “Go bathe and return. We shall bestow the Name upon you and accept you into refuge. After that, do whatever may arise in your mind. We shall never abandon you.”
Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): By this it is shown that in the Pushtimarg, once a soul comes into refuge, Prabhu never abandons that soul in any circumstance. This is because this is the path of divine grace. Therefore the Lord does not judge according to the soul’s actions. Shri Gusainji Himself is directly the complete Purushottam, and thus he spoke in this manner.
Then that man bathed and returned and submitted: “Maharajadhiraj! Please bestow the Name upon me.” Then Shri Gusainji bestowed the Name upon him. Afterward Shri Gusainji bathed and entered the temple of Shrinathji. Later the doors opened for rajbhog darshan. All the Vaishnavas had darshan of Shrinathji, and this man also had darshan. After Shri Gusainji completed the seva of Shrinathji, he descended from Shri Giriraj and came to his bethak, where he sat upon cushions and bolsters. Then all the Vaishnavas had darshan of Shri Gusainji and returned to their homes. That man also had darshan, offered dandavat pranam, and presented an offering. Then Shri Gusainji instructed him, “Today you should take mahaprasad here itself.”
Afterward Shri Gusainji went to dine. Having completed his meal and taken pan, Shri Gusainji Himself served a plate from his own hand to that man. Then the man took mahaprasad. Afterward, taking permission, he returned to his home in Shri Gokul. There he reflected within himself, “Now I should test this.” Then he began living in the cremation ground. There he would bake and eat coarse bread in the fires of funeral pyres, and day and night he would think: “Let us see how Shri Gusainji delivers me.”
Prasang 2 – The King Cured by the Vaishnava’s Leftovers
A certain king lived in another land. He suffered from severe leprosy. The king tried many medicines, but the disease did not leave him. Someone advised him, “If you undertake pilgrimage to holy places, your leprosy may be cured.” The king spent lakhs of rupees and bathed at all the sacred places, yet his disease did not disappear. Then the king set out personally on pilgrimage. After traveling to many holy places, he eventually arrived at Shri Gokul. Yet even after all these pilgrimages, his disease still remained.
Then the king had darshan of Shri Gusainji and submitted: “Maharaj! I have spent lakhs of rupees and bathed at all the holy places, yet my disease has not left me. You are divine, and considering this, I have come before you. If you do not cure my disease, then who else can cure it? Whom else shall I approach apart from you?” Seeing the king’s humility, Shri Gusainji — who is supremely compassionate — instructed him: “There lives one of our sevaks in the cremation ground. Go there and eat his leftovers, and then your disease will disappear. But that Vaishnava will not willingly give you his leftovers, so you must take them forcefully. Do not feel shame within your mind.”
Then the king, according to Shri Gusainji’s command, went to the cremation ground and asked that Vaishnava for leftovers. The Vaishnava did not give them. Then the king forcibly took and ate the leftovers. As soon as the leftovers entered his body, his leprosy immediately vanished. He obtained a beautiful, divine, youthful body. The king became extremely joyful. Then the Vaishnava asked the king, “Why did you eat my leftovers?” The king replied, “Shri Gusainji instructed me: ‘Go to the cremation ground and eat the leftovers of that Vaishnava; then your disease will vanish.’ Therefore I obeyed his command and came here. I ate your leftovers, and my disease disappeared.”
Then the Vaishnava reflected within himself: “Even now Shri Gusainji remembers me?” Afterward the Vaishnava firmly resolved in his mind: “Shri Gusainji is truly the direct Supreme Lord. I myself have behaved with great wickedness and committed many sinful acts. Yet Prabhu is exceedingly compassionate. He did not consider my faults but instead regarded me with favor and did not abandon me. He paid no attention to my actions. Therefore now I shall go before him and perform seva according to his command.” Then he bathed there, returned home, put on clean garments, and came before Shri Gusainji.
Afterward he submitted: “Maharaj! You are the complete Purushottam, while I am by nature a wicked and sinful soul who has committed many evil deeds. Yet you are supremely compassionate. Therefore now please bestow your grace and favor upon me.” Then Shri Gusainji mercifully instructed him: “Tomorrow observe a fast and receive Brahmasambandha.” According to Shri Gusainji’s command, he observed the fast. The next day he bathed, put on pure untouched garments, came before Shri Gusainji, and submitted: “Maharaj! Kindly grant me Brahmasambandha.” Then Shri Gusainji bestowed Brahmasambandha upon him and gave him the name “Vaishnavdas.”
Afterward Shri Gusainji established seva for him and taught him all the methods and practices of seva. Thus the Vaishnava installed Shri Thakurji, arranged a new temple, purified it thoroughly, changed all the vessels, and began performing seva according to Shri Gusainji’s instructions. Later he invited Shri Gusainji to his home and had the arati of Shri Thakurji performed before him. Then, according to his capacity, he offered gifts to Shri Gusainji. That same day, according to his devotion, he invited Vaishnavas and served mahaprasad to them. Afterward the Vaishnava began performing seva according to the tradition of Shri Mahaprabhuji. Within some time Shri Thakurji began revealing affectionate divine experiences to him and would personally ask him for whatever He desired. Thus he became an excellent Bhagavadiya.
After some time his body became weak. Then he sent his Shri Thakurji and all the wealth in his home to the house of Shri Gusainji. Afterward he left his body and entered Bhagavad-lila. Then the Vaishnavas performed his funeral rites.
Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): The intention of this account is that a Vaishnava should maintain faith in the words of Shri Gusainji. That king considered Shri Gusainji’s command and ate the leftovers of the Vaishnava, and thus his leprosy was cured. Therefore faith is a very great thing. Through faith all attainments become possible. It is also shown that even while testing, that Vaishnava constantly remembered Shri Gusainji day and night, and therefore Shri Gusainji transformed his understanding.
That Vaishnava was such a greatly blessed Bhagavadiya and recipient of Shri Gusainji’s grace that the limit of his story cannot be reached; so how much can possibly be told?
