JSK Shreekantbhai,
In my opinion, this Lila was performed by Shri Krishna for the first and the last stated reasons :-
1) Indra had become Abhimani and to shatter his Ego, Shri Krishna decided to make him unimportant by way of Shri Govardhan puja instead of Indra Puja.
2) Also Thakorji wanted to protect His dear and near Vrajvasis from Anyashraya.
I just hope that I got a glimpse of the Bhav behind this Leela of Shri Krishna.

Jai Jai Shree Gokulesh, Shri Krishna's each and every lila performed in vraj was for vrajvasis. He performed Goverdhanlila to protect vrajvasis from anyashraya, to shatter Indra's ego is secondary matter.

Yes, I too am of the opinion that the very reason why this leela took place was to protect the Vrajvasis from Anyashray . This also forms the starting point of the leela itself. as the leelas progesses, Indras ego is hurt, and Shree Thakorji after lot of contemplation, decides to lift the Govardhan for the protection of the Vrajvasis.
Hence, Anyashray is the most important factor in the Govardhan leela.

Dear Friends,
Jai Shree Krishna,
The main reason cited for Goverdhan Leela was to shatter Lord Indra's ego who had become very proud of his achivements and used to harass to villagers.
The deeper meaning into this Leela was to protect Vrajvasis f rom Ananyashray. Through various meanings into this Leela one comes to this conclusion that Lord Krishna is our protector and no one can be greater than Him.

Govardhan Leela was carried by shri thakorji to protect vrajvasi's from Anyashray that they been doing since long(i.e. worshipping their offers to Indra). Thakorji thought that , as vrajvasi's have considered krishna as their everthing(sarvasva). So he (SHRI KRISHNA) thought if they wish to get him as their sarvasva then the anyashray they are would be an obstacle for their wish to fulfill.
Hence he did to break anyashray of Vrajvasi's.

Shri thakorji had performed Goverdhanleela for the Vrajvasis to forbid the anyashray that vrajvasis were doing in ignorance for the years. So after that when Indra came to know that all the Bhogs were put forward for shri Thakorji than Indra Got angry and thought that his ego has hurt . so after that Shri Thakorji shatters Indras ego.so Shri thakorji has done two leelas at that same occation as mentioned that Shatters Indras ego and to prevent Vrajvasis from Anyashray..

in bal bodh granth four majour purposes of life are discussed and explained by shri vallabh prabhu
dharma arth kaam moksh
to shatter the ego of indra is related to dharma or no place for ego in dharma and needs to be shattered
to ensure the puja of giriraj ji is to ensure the wish of material gain is (ARTH) is satisfied
when krishana was born entire golok came with him to vraj and lived a life of common human being
a human by nature expects some help from divine when troubled and for that giriraj ji is the deity to approach for vaishnavs who will ful fill the financial or other necessaties of our life
to enjoy many samagris him self is an act of taste sence of lord and to be on the reciving end of bhavs of vraj bhaktah kaam is wish or bhavs towards lord and lord loves to be on the reciving end to what ever a bhakt has to offer
gita says that lord is karya, karan and karta or lord is yagya , naivedhya and yagya purush so it is lord who is the recgonised as final reciver of all
to protect vrajvasis from anyaashray dradhta and only one ashray is single most important factor for who ever strives for moksh (pushti margiya moksh included) by five different margs proposed in vedic cultures such as bhakti ,gnayan , vairagya , taap and yoga

Govardhanleela sadhan na charmatkarshni leela chhe.Yagnabhogta Yagna karta.
Daan, tyag, yaag, vrat- Aradhya(bhagvad swaroop) hoi tene anurup hoi etleke tatsukhi hovi joiye. Sidhyarth sadhana- bijane prasanna karva mate. Tatsukharth sadhana-Aradhana thai jai,potane kai joitu nathi pan jeni aradhana kari rahyachhe tene sukh, shanti, santosh ane prasannata male. Sewa bhajniyanu hit, sukh, prasannatama parivasan thai to aradhana. Prabhune rijvya to aradhana. Samagri, exhibition, prsad na dhe - siddhi kahi sakay. Aradhana sadhanama degrade na thavi joiye. Indrato bhagvannu ek priya roop chhe pan sakshat bhagvan jyare same hoi to bijane manvani shi jaroor? Indra pujanma bhaav dushit hato, Indra prasanna thasheto badalama varsad padshe(like give and take)…In other words anyashraya. Shri Prabhu started puja of govardhan, cow, agni, Brahman. Annakut mahamahotsav ganyo jai chhe kemke Prabhu pote utsav karyo chhe. Ane annakut ma Govardhannu roop leyine Khayine batavyu. Hamaro dev Govardhan rano….Then vrushti by Indra but Prabhu jene potana manya chhe temne mate Govardhanleela prakat kari. Prabhu bhaktadhinta prakat kareto samajvu ke leelani parakashtha chhe.Tame Bhagvanne khush karva mango chho, Bhagvan tamane khush karva mange chhe. Aham bhaktaparadhino. When Prabhu lifted govardhan, Nandbawa remembered the words of Gargacharyaji at the time of name ceremony that

is purna purushottam(parbrahma swaroop). In the same way our Shri Gurudev shows the swaroopgyan of our Prabhu birajman in our gruh. Then Indra realized- Aaj surraj payan paryo. (Pujya Shyammanohar bawashrike vachanamrutmese). Hence, to protect the vrajvasis from anyashray is the most important factor as said by Shreekantbhai. Krishn ne leela aparampar che so we cannot decide but yes looks like that goverdhan lila was just to protect vrajvasis which would even destroy indra ego.....
