Dear Manish, Jai shree Krishna, If a Vaishanav does Ekadasi fasting he attains Parmeshmarna Darshan and is forgiven from all his sins and becomes close to Lord. Ekadasi fasting one can take Sabudana, rava, Fruits, milk, potato...(upasavali Saabzi) with no mustard seeds...made in ghee. Whatever we normally eat and crave for is not eaten and we fast and remember God. Haldi is not used. I dunno abt Cauliflower but mostly milk products are consumed. And the fast is broken on the next day. Do correct me if wrong. Rice, Dal,Chapati, cereals not consumed. Rajgira is also used. Jigna

Jai Shree Krishna, So we break the fast next morning, would that be after sunrise and before a certain time. I think tea would not be allowed Vasant Bhai, as few Vaishnavs dont have tea and coffe any how, saying its a form of addiction. I could be wrong and I also have tea and coffee normally. Thanks Jai Shree Krishna

Jai Shree Krishna, Dear Vasantbhai, I would like to explain a few points about Ekadasi fasting and about the debate. Ekadasi is the day when you have to remember Thakorji. And in your normal routine life everyone has very little time to remember Thakorji. So, if one is away from the such materilaistic inclinations one can remember HIM. Most of us drink tea not to satisfy thirst but as a form of addition. On fasting one shoduld not do or crave for such things as he just needs to Remember Thakorji on this day. So, Tea / Coffee shd not be consumed on that day. Regds Jigna But one can have milk instead.

Jai Shree Krishna, I think we should not take softdrinks on that say as it also contains caffeine and also what preservatives they may contain, esp outside India. We should try and avoid most things from outside on Ekadashi. But along which whatever strict rules we may follow, Bhagvad smaran, remembarance, reading, seva etc should have the highest priority. But even at times which I cannot do unfortnately. Manish

Jai Shree Krushna, First we should understand what is 'Ekadashi'. Ekadashi as the name suggest is 10+1. We humanbeings have ten indriya(senses).Out of ten, five r 'karmendriya'and five r 'Gyanendriya'.Five 'karmendriya' r two hands, two legs, upasth and guda. Five 'gyanendriya' r nose, eyes ,ears, tongue, skin. Ekadashi means to unite this ten indriya into one and do seva, smaran of Shree Thakorji. On Ekadashi we have to do Upvaas which wrongly spoken by many as 'Apvas'.There is drastic difference between this two words as explained by Shree Dwarkeshlalji Mahoday(Amreli Ghar)in aapshris pustak 'Pushti Parimal'.Upvaas means 'Shree Thakorji paase vaas' and Apvaas means 'Narak ma vaas'. So all vaishnavs pls speak upvaas and not apvaas. Now coming to the point, the main purpose of doing upvaas on ekadashi is to bring all our indirya toghether and do seva, smaran of Shree Thakorji. All our indriya should not waste time in doing anyother activities but only doing prabhu seva-smaran. First it was like small children and those who cannot stay starving could have 'faral' but now the trend is many have 'faral' on ekadashi. Anyways, we cannot have vegetables like cauliflower, ladies finger, beans, peas etc on ekadashi but we can have potatoes, cucumber on ekadashi. We can also have milk, fruits on ekadashi. Jai shree Krushna

Jai Shri Krishna, i have three questions about ekadashi fasting. 1) can we eat salt in our food or should we use sindhukhar(not sure of spelling)? 2) why can we eat potato and not any other vegetable? 3) many people eat saboodana and potato in the afternoon and again potato fry in the evening. is this called fasting while eating 2 meals and all the farar? the question about tea, i think we should abstain from tea and coffee and any other drink besides milk and fruit juice! tea and coffee have caffein in them and i don't think we can have them. looking forward to your views jai shri krishna manish

Jai Shree Krishna, The reason we can eat potato is as in Mahabharat, Udhyog parva, where Vidur ji is telling Maharaj Dhritrastra that the following are allowed in ekadashi. Apo - Water Mulam - roots - potato Phalam - fruits Paya - Drinks derived from milk havi - Ghee Brahmin Kamya - If for fulfilling Brahmins wish we have to take something else. Guru Vachnam - Is the guru, allows something as a concession or depending on certain circumstances. Aushadam - medicine So thats why potato is allowed, as it is considered roots. Free flow salt has anti caking agent, as it contains very little quantity of rice or grains. But ir breaks our fast, so we should use Sidhalun (Rocksalt). Manish Jai Shree Krishna
