Jai Jai Shri Gokulesh
Why do vaishnavs not eat onions? Is there a simple reason - i have never been given a reason - it would just be nice to know to pass on to people when they ask. I find that the our elders often arent interested in giving explanations so if u could shed light then I would be greatful.jai jai shri gokulesh Jai Jai ShriGokulesh Parivaar, Baroda

jay shree krushna gopalbhai
as you know that our main karya is to perform SEVA OF SHREE THAKORJI .
when you eat some onions a bad smell comes from your mouth and body. this bad semll makes problems to other people.
while performing SEVA if bad smell comes from you, that will make parishram to thakorji
this is the reason that we do not eat onions

jay shri krishna!
i completely agree with vaibhav bhai.
the only reason for vaishnavas not eating onions is the smell that comes from the mouth after eating onions which causes shram to thakurji.

Jai Jai Shri Gokulesh
A. From the viewpoint of Pushti-bhakti-sampradaay, anything that is not offered to once Sevya Sri Thakurji must not be utilized. The scriptures prohibit eating onion.
B. Breaking of law definitely brings some kind of incompetency in the subject if not prove completely disqualified.

Jayshrikrishna,
my understanding is all this reasons are correct. but Reetaben's point @ eating tamasi food & tamas budhi ma bagvadbhav na take that is the most important one. this the resone we don't use carrots, tamato & many other food in seva. In Srinathji they don't use red papers instad (mari) black papers are used. Also ShriMahaprabhuji didn't even use brinjal (ringan / egg plant in usa ) in seva until Shri Jagannathprabhu asked HIM to , cause Jaganathji likes ringan. but in vaishnavs home there is only cirten time of the year that we are allowed to use veges like ringan, cauliflower, cabbage etc.

Jai Shree Krishna
The answer of the question is to be read with Reetaben And Bindiben which fully explain the answer.
I confess and narrate the personal experience that whenver i have consumed some of above , specifacally onion, I feel laziness (alashya)next day morning and get disturbed while doing archna/seva.
But in todys's life , it is difficult to avoid daily due our habit of eating out side and therefore we avoid eating such tamas food on specific religious ceremonies/ observing ekadashi/purnima etc.
Some of us must have observed the same thing.

Oions are Tamasi eatables. In Pushtimargiya sampraday tamasi food is prohibited.
After eating these we mind will not aligned towards Thakurji's seva.
There are other eatables also which vaishnavs are not supposed to eat like Garlic,Tomato,Raddish,Carrot,Cauliflower,Cabbage etc.
