The Gayatri (Vedic prayer to illuminate the intellect) is the universal prayer enshrined in the Vedas (Divine Knowledge), the most ancient scriptures of man. It is addressed to the Immanent and Transcendent Divine, which has been given the name 'Savitha', meaning 'that from which all this is born.'
Usually The Gayatri Mantra dixa is given during THE THREAD CEREMONY / YAGNOPAVITH / UPANAYANAM.

Jayshrikrishna,
I heard that brahmins, xatriyas & veshyas can have gaytri mantra dixa & diffrent gayatri mantra for each of the cast. dose any one knows more about this ?

Gayatri Mantra is the beej mantra from which whole of vedas has evolved. Gayatri mantra describes the swaroop of Paramtatva Shree Krushna. It is a very very holy mantra which cannot be recited by everyone.Only persons who have taken yagnopavith can recite Gayatri Mantra. To the best of my knowledge stree and sudhras cannot recite gayatri mantra.
Now a days we find everyone reciting gayatri mantra in tv serials and even recordings of gayatri mantra are available in markets. But, all this things are very wrong as the people who do this really do not have any knowledge of what the mantra is.
Not only Gayatri Mantra but any mantra which has the word 'OM' in it, cannot be recited unless we are in a sudh avastha. For this reason, our astakshar mantra doesnot contain the word 'OM' in it because we can recite the same anywhere in any condition. We can recite astakshar mantra even in 'Sutak'.
For Pushtijeevs, Shree Sarovottam Stotra is their Gayatri Mantra and therefore we should do recite Shree Sarvottamji only when we are in sudh avastha.

Good inputs Snehal bhai.
Yes, The Ashtakshar mantra, is devoid of the holy chant 'Om' making it, the all time, anywhere and every where mantra. Further, the Ashtakshar mantra deeksha can be had by anyone irrespective of his cast or creed and also by woman too.
However, it must be remembered that only after having recieved the deeksha sgould one recite the mantra, in private or among fellow deeksharthis/vaishnavs, and the mantra is not to be publicly recited.
