252 Vaishnav Varta 189 - A Hunter

Now, the Bhav (inner sentiment) of the account of a hunter who was a sevak of Shri Gusainji is being explained.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): This is a rajasic devotee. In the divine play, her name is “Vishvakseni.” She manifested from Shridama, and therefore possessed his devotional disposition.

He was born as a hunter (Pardhi) in Lohaban. From the very time of his birth, he performed wicked deeds. Living this way, he reached about twenty years of age. Then one day he went to Mansarovar for hunting. That has already been described above.

Prasang 1 – The Hunter Takes Shelter of Shri Gusainji By merely coming into contact with them, the hunter’s intellect became purified. Spiritual understanding arose within him. Then the hunter said, “If I now become a Vaishnava, it would be good.” He then asked the Vaishnavas, “How does one become a Vaishnava?” The Vaishnavas replied, “Go to Shri Gokul and receive the Name from Shri Gusainji. Then you will become a Vaishnava.” Thereupon the hunter went to Shri Gokul. At that time, Shri Gusainji had gone to Thakurani Ghat to perform the evening Sandhya worship. The hunter arrived at Thakurani Ghat and asked the Vaishnavas, “Is this the Gusainji of Shri Gokul?” The Vaishnavas replied, “Yes, this is he.”

Then the hunter came forward and offered dandavat pranam. He made a humble request: “Maharaj! I have come to your shelter. Therefore, please show mercy to me and bestow the Name upon me.” Then Shri Gusainji said, “You are a hunter. You have come after shooting arrows at swans and their mates. How can I give the Name to you?” The hunter humbly prayed: “O Lord of Compassion! Indeed, I am such a person. Whatever I am, I am by your command. But from now on, I will never again kill any living being. Therefore, please be merciful and give me the Name.” Then Shri Gusainji said, “Never again commit violence against any living being. Earn your livelihood through service and farming.”

The hunter replied, “My Lord! I shall do exactly as you have commanded. Therefore, now please accept me into your shelter.” Then Shri Gusainji instructed him, “Go and bathe in Shri Yamunaji.” The hunter bathed in Shri Yamunaji and returned. Then Shri Gusainji mercifully called him near and bestowed the Name upon him. Afterward, he again instructed him: “I tell you once more—never kill any living being. Go and maintain yourself through service and work.” Through the association of those swans, this hunter became a good Vaishnava. He became a worthy recipient of grace and a devotee of Bhagavan. He continuously recited the Ashtakshar mantra.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): In this account it is shown that no matter how fallen a soul may be, if he comes to the shelter of Shri Gusainji, then Shri Gusainji certainly delivers him. Therefore, in the “Namaratnakhya,” Shri Raghunathji has written one of his names as “Mahapatita-Pavanah” — the Purifier of the Greatly Fallen. It is also taught here that a Vaishnava should remain fearful of committing violence against living beings.

Since this hunter became such a recipient of grace and such a devotee of Bhagavan, how far can his glories be described? Thus ends the account.
